Capital Beirut

From the year 200 AD. J.-C., Beirut was known by his law school who had a special legal significance, because it was the first school of Roman law in the eastern Roman Empire.

The school was destroyed by earthquakes around 551 AD. J.-C.. The two famous lawyers in this school were Papinian (140-212 AD.) and Ulpian (who died in 228 AD.). For all these reasons, Justinian, the Roman Emperor, gave him an honorable title, « Berytus Nutrix Legum », which means mother Beirut laws.
